In a poll conducted by Mainichi Shimbun‘s Mantan Web earlier this week, fans named this season’s Nurse Witch Komugi-chan R as their 527th favorite magical girl anime of all time. The poll asked over a thousand anime fans to list their five favorite magical girl shows. Cardcaptor Sakura finished atop the list, appearing in 25% of ballots, barely edging out Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica at 23%.

Fans of Nurse Witch Komugi-chan R were pleasantly surprised at the show’s high ranking; the 12-episode slapstick magical girl parody finished between all-time classics Mahou Shoujo Nante Mou Ii Desukara and Angelique: Shiroi Tsubasa no Memoire.

“I was just hoping Komugi R would be in the top 1000, but finishing 527th and beating out memorable shows like Nanatsuiro Drops and Ryuusei Sentai Musumet… I’m just blown away. It looks like the community liked the show a lot more than I expected!” one comment on Yaron blog reads.

Its ranking places Nurse Witch Komugi-chan R in the top 1% of magical girl shows, but while it will undoubtedly remembered as one of the more notable anime in the genre, other observers have criticized voters for neglecting magical girl shows from more than a few years ago.

“Seriously, Komugi-chan R over Kobato and Rance: Sabaku no Guardian? It’s as if the community doesn’t even remember anything other than the few thousand magical girl anime that have aired in the last 5 years,” reads a post by ChippleIsMaiWaifu. “I’d put Komugi maybe in the top 700, but there’s no way on Earth that it’s better than Mahou no Star Magical Emi, MoetanMahou no Yousei Persia, or Kaitou Saint Tail. Those are absolute classic magical girl shows that are definitely top 500 of all time, despite what all these ignorant plebs think.”
