CEDAR RAPIDS, IA — 24-year-old college student Philip Stevens stares at his laptop computer with a perplexed look. On the screen is Boku no Pico, a hentai from 2006 featuring the eponymous effeminate young boy.
“I don’t think this is where that character came from. They must be mistaken,” Stevens exclaims near the end of the episode. Stevens was browsing 4chan earlier today when he came across an image of Sakura Chiyo from Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun and posted in the thread asking, “what anime is this?”
Stevens tells Anime Maru that many helpful responses quickly came flooding in directing him to the yaoi hentai, though he admits he already had suspicions.
“I’ve already seen Boku no Pico a few times, but I don’t remember any of those characters showing up. I decided to watch it again just in case I missed it before.”
Stevens admits it’s awkward watching Boku no Pico over and over again; he is beginning to wonder if anime communities such as YouTube comments, /r/anime, ANN forums, and /a/ have been lying to him all this time.
“I am also beginning to suspect that not all anime songs are ‘Sandstorm’ by Darude,” Stevens adds.
At the conclusion of the interview, Anime Maru’s reporter helpfully recommended that Stephens watch the sequels Pico to Chico and Pico x CoCo x Chico, suggesting that he would find the character he was looking for there.
