Sentai Filmworks announced on Friday that is has licensed Gin’iro no Olynsis, the 2006 anime TV-series by Toei Animation. The company plans to release the 12 episode show digitally and on home video.
Gin’iro no Olynssis takes place in the distant future, where people live in the ruins of civilization and mysterious sentient robots roam the Earth, terrorizing the population. The main character, Tokito, meets a mysterious girl who holds an ancient power, giving hope to the rest of mankind.
“We know that fans in North America have been demanding this show for years,” Sentai Filmworks announced in an official statement, referring to the anime’s enormous and fervent fan base.
Sentai Filmworks’ announcement sent ripples through the industry over the weekend; many bloggers reacted with excitement when the seminal show will finally be available for American audiences. “Gin’iro [no Olynssis] shatters the mold and will make you rethink anime as a medium,” wrote Scamp of the Cart Driver. “This anime is right up there with Neon Genesis Evangelion, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and Oretachi ni Tsubasa wa Nai: Under the Innocent Sky.”
Sentai Filmworks will release the full 12 episodes with English and Japanese audio on DVD for $74.98, Blu-Ray for $99.98, and VHS for $134.98.
