History of Anime: A Short Look at the Medieval Anime Industry

You might love your anime and manga, but do you know about the origins of your hobby? Did you think anime had its origins in the mid-20th century? Or perhaps ancient Japanese wood blocks? You have been misinformed. Join Anime Maru as we look back to the works that started it all, in Medieval Europe!

1One of the most iconic aspect of Medieval anime is the consistently low animation quality. This was caused by a lack of skilled animators and tight budget constraints. Despite the apparent lack in budget, these works have received a modern cult following of people who enjoy these works ironically.

Real fans know that the illuminated manuscript was better

You though cat ears and monster girls were a new thing? Think again. The Medieval period saw a huge amount of furry little waifu. Despite the tone of these illustrations was somewhat darker, the roots of popular series such as Monster Musume and Kemono Friends can be clearly seen here.

Medieval period saw a sharp decline in doujin products. The flourishing doujin scene of Antiquity was replaced with strict control brought upon by religious laws. Ancient Greek culture was dominated by erodoujin; shotacon and especially incest were popular enough to get featured in myths. Luckily the doujin scene never fully disappeared, but you had to know where to look. For example marginals of texts were a surefire place to find enthusiastic scribbles.

Historically, people have entrusted their souls to art. One of these works is the long running manga Berserk by Kentaro Miura, serialized since 5th century with no end in sight. As the Medieval people and their dark souls have admitted to being huge fans of Berserk, it’s only fair to assume that this armor portrayed in scriptures is in fact a Berserk reference.5

There are a lot of references, as you can see.
