PRINCETON, NJ – For the first time this season, researchers at Princeton University were able to confirm that the anime M3 The Dark Metal (M3: Sono Kuroki Hagane) actually has real viewers.
The study, conducted by Princeton’s Social Media Analytics Department, conducted detailed searches and cross referenced their content against actual show data. According to lead researcher Dr. Dinesh Duban, this is done to rule out false positives: “We want to make sure that these are automated tweets or perhaps users that use the hashtag to comment on the fact that they aren’t watching the show,” he said. “By running a series of comparisons against lists of character names or plot points, we can pinpoint the tweets that are actually coming from real viewers.”
And apparently such real viewers indeed exist, according to the new paper authored by Dr. Duban. His team was able to identify as many as six real viewers, with several other results at varying levels of confidence. “Taking Poe’s Law into account, sometimes a tweet is just sarcastic and there is no real way we can tell,” he admitted.
